Shortly after the invention of the gun. The first trigger may have been for the "matchlock" musket- it pressed a smoldering bit of cord into the powder charge to fire it. The cord was held by one end of the serpentine- a metal rod shaped somewhat like a letter S. Pressing one end of the S caused it to pivot on a pin, and the other end pressed down into the priming pan.
