One surprising thing that's still affecting France today is the "Zone Rouge" areas of northern France; "Red Zones" where any entry is prohibited. That's because of the enormous quantities of unexploded ordnance; high explosive and poison gas artillery shells that remain buried underground. People continue to be killed or injured when World War One explosives detonate 100 years after the war.

There are large areas of land which are completely poisoned; very high levels of arsenic remain in the soil, and very little can grow there.
