Anything earlier than about 3000BCE is pre-historic, and there's darned little "history" earlier than about 1,000BCE. Since our best guess is that the human race "began" - in the sense that anything before that was pre-human - in about 150,000 BCE, then "pre-history" lasted for about 147,000 years.
