Women were perceived as mothers, homemakers. secretaries, hard workers, but unfortunately not necessarily equal to men. The women disproved this to the men of the United States, in Britain and other countries where women built everything needed for the war front. The older men however did realize women could step up to the plate to do a hard works day at what had been traditionally called "man's work" because they remembered what the women and their mothers did to create all the bombs and tanks for WW1.
Now for a joke to your question. I could not resist having answered this question many times. How were women seen before WW2. With your eyes. Ha ha.
Before World War II, women had jobs in what was considered their areas. They were secretaries, stenographers, teachers, and homemakers. During World War II, women were needed in factories doing physical, manual labor while the men were off at war. They also entered the workplace as cab drivers, and bus drivers. Before the war, it was very uncommon to see females in these roles.

The primary occupations of women before World War 1 were teaching and nursing. Of course, there were exceptions to this, but the war did create the opportunity for women to work in factories and other jobs that had typically been held by men.

Women became most independent after World War 1, taking on the "men's roles" but but became more independent again during WW2. Some main roles of women before WW2 are nurses, shop assistants and typists.
