There was no conscription in Australia in WW1 and it wasn't necessary as the average Australian thought the war was all a bit of a lark and it would be over soon any way.

However, there were still those whose were still pro-conscription.

Pro:

it would give us a chance to prove ourselves as a new nation

we would be given the benefit of having the 'mother country' help us if we were to ever be invaded/get in trouble.

to keep strength and numbers in our depleting AIF (Australian imperial forces)

Cons:

Being a war, many families had already lost members, or had heard of the atrocities which had happened overseas. No one wanted to take the risk of it being someone close to them if they could help it
