After (not during) WW 1, The the Empire of Austria-Hungary was divided into several smaller countries. After WW 2, the Russians turned the occupied zone in Germany that was under their control into the German Democratic Republic. So after WW 2, Germany became divided into the (western) German Federal Republic and the (Communist) German Democratic Republic, usually called East Germany. Also, the Ottoman Empire was split up into several countries after WW 1, although it must be said that many of those countries had already been autonomous or practically independent for many years before.
They eventually had to split the empire into countries that aren't the right Split Because Europe didn't know that they already had 3 major religions ;D

The world split into smaller countries primarily due to historical processes such as colonization, wars, and the rise of nationalism. As empires expanded and contracted, diverse ethnic, cultural, and linguistic groups sought self-determination, leading to the formation of new nations. Additionally, the dissolution of larger political entities, like the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, further contributed to the fragmentation into smaller countries. These dynamics reflect the complex interplay of identity, governance, and territorial claims throughout history.
The empire stayed the same, but after the death of his son did the empire split in three
After World War I, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was split into several independent countries, most notably Austria and Hungary. This division was formalized in the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919. The empire's dissolution also led to the creation of new nations such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, significantly altering the political landscape of Central and Eastern Europe.

During WWI and the defeat of the central powers. Follows the Treaty of Versailles which had many demands that the Central Powers had to do to pay for the war. One was to split up the Ottoman empire and each of the Allies get some of the countries they owned.
Something that has overall reign over something else. For example: Gibraltar (An Island off the coast of Spain) has the UK as its sovereign (owner) of sorts. During the collapse of the British Empire, many countries split off from the Empire and became independent countries. Some remained to stay, and so the UK has sovereignty over these countries.
