Britain declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. This declaration came shortly after Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, prompting Britain and France to respond in defense of Poland. The formal declaration marked the beginning of Britain's involvement in World War II.

Great Britain, France, and the United States defeated Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Russia made a separate peace with the Entente powers a year earlier.
Britain entered the war as a result of the German invasion of Belgium, as Britain had a defense treaty with Belgium (Britain wanted to enter the war and found a 100 year old treaty to use as pretext). Italy, who was allied with Germany before the war, did not enter on the German side as they had a defense pact, and joined with the Entente powers with promises of German and Austrian colonies and territory.
In 1938, Hitler ordered the German army into Austria. Later that same year, thousands of Jewish shops and hundreds of Synagogues are burned down. In 1939, Germany invades Czechoslovakia. On September 1, Germany attacks Poland. France and The UK declare war on Germany two days later, and the war in Europe begins.
