After World War I, Germany was held responsible for the conflict and was forced to pay reparations outlined in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The total amount was set at 132 billion gold marks, roughly equivalent to $33 billion at the time. This financial burden contributed to significant economic hardship in Germany during the 1920s and played a role in the rise of political instability in the country.
