Rene Robert Cavalier Sieur de La Salle was a famous French explorer in the late 1600s. He journeyed to the Great Lakes region of America, as well as the Mississippi River. He claimed part of these territories for France.

Jacques Cartier is the French explorer who explored the St. Lawrence River in the early 16th century and claimed the region, known as Canada, for France.
It was Jacques Cartier that explored Canada and claimed it for France. When arriving in the region the area was then known as Newfoundland. It was in 1534 when Jacques Cartier arrived in the area now known as Canada.
In 1524, Francis sent Italian-born Giovanni da Verrazano to explore the region between Florida and Newfoundland for a route to the Pacific Ocean
