In modern British usage, a princess is often a title borne by the daughter or a granddaughter of the sovereign, or by the wife of the sovereign's son or grandson. She enjoys the style "Her Royal Highness" (H.R.H.) which appears before the title of Princess. The sovereign's own daughters and granddaughters prefix the title Princess to their own Christian names, for example, Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, and Princess Anne. This is a special distinction that indicates that the lady is a descendant of royal blood. The wives of sovereign's sons and grandsons - not themselves descended of the blood royal - use the title Princess prefixed to their husbands' names, instead of to their own. Thus, when Marie-Christine Trowbridge married H.R.H Prince Michael of Kent, Marie-Chrisine's new title was Princess Michael of Kent (not Princess Marie-Christine, a title reserved for the daughter or granddaugher of the sovereign.) A duke is the highest rank in the British peerage, the British system of nobility; the wife of a duke is a duchess. Many dukes and duchesses in modern times are unrelated to the British royal family, but at one time this very high-ranking noble title was reserved for the sons of the sovereign. It is customary today for the sovereign's younger sons to be created dukes, as well. These royal dukes continue to enjoy the "His Royal Highness" style before his other titles, and their wives share the same style and title. So, for example there have been several couples known as H.R.H. the duke of York and H.R.H. the duchess of York; H.R.H. the duke of Kent and H.R.H. the duke of Gloucester are both grandsons of King George V. The duke of Devonshire, for example, is not immediately descended from the royal family, and does not enjoy the use of the H.R.H. style. His wife is a duchess, but not a princess.

What is the difference between a princess and a grand duchess?

They are equivalent ranks- western wise- Great Britain does not use the Grand Duchess rank, which was used by czarist Russia and also Imperial Austria. Some linguists have argued that Archduchess was a more accurate rendition for the Austrian Noblewomen. A Grand Duchess of Russia was both a Grand Duchess and a Crown Princess- or Czarevna. there were Grand Duchesses such as Elisabeth ( the sister of Czar Nicholas II) who were not Czarevnas- daughters of the Czar but were int he Horizontal or Fraternal linel. Generally the Grand Duchess ranks applied to the equivalent of Crown Princesses in the West. She should be addressed as Your Highness (Imperial Highness in formal occasions) and if under l8, as Anastasia was, (Your Grace). Dimitri got it right. Grace was NOT her middle name. Olga can be very loosely translated as something like Grace or Bounty, divine favor, however.

Why is camila a duchess and not a princess?

Camilla is a duchess because she holds the title of Duchess of Cornwall, which was conferred upon her upon her marriage to Charles, Prince of Wales. In the British royal hierarchy, titles such as "duchess" are typically granted to individuals through marriage or royal appointment, while "princess" usually denotes a direct blood relation to the monarch. Although she is the wife of the future king, she does not hold the title of princess by birthright, which is why she is referred to as a duchess.
