Martin Luther King Jr. was influenced by Henry David Thoreau, who believed it was the obligation of citizens to disobey unjust laws. The Jim Crow laws which segregated the South were unjust laws, and King believed they had to be disobeyed if there was ever going to be equality in this country.

India wanted their independance from Britain. Many wanted to fight England and start a war. Ghandi recommended instead that they apply civil disobedience. This is a protest movement that applies pressue by going on sit-in's and boycotts and protest without violence.

Martin Luther King, Jr. used this to obtains freedoms for Black Americans in the 1960's.
