Before World War II, Paris was the preeminent center of modernism. Modernism is considered to have begun after World War I. After witnessing the destruction unleashed by this war, modernists had two very different reactions. One group expressed regret for the passing of the simpler days before the war. Others began to focus on the effects of the war by exploring the feelings brought on by this new world. The feelings were often those of alienation and feeling disconnected from the physical world.
