It is human nature to strive to be better than other humans, it is how we have got to where we are. Certainly we'd have none of the technology we do now, most of it having been developed, fully or partially by the military.

Secondly, in an equal world everyone would be in their dream job earning a good amount and we'd have nobody to do the critical jobs like manual labour, dentistry, farming, etc. Amount of pay and/or necessity would no longer place people in these jobs.

Thirdly, in an equal world there is no point in striving to be better because you won't get anything more from it. Large companies like Virgin and Microsoft thus wouldn't exist and again, technological advances would suffer greatly.

As it stands, an equal world is not possible. Perhaps when we invent a mindless drone to do the menial tasks we can look at improving the quality of life for those who don't want to do anything or are unable to strive for a better life.
