France and Britain had been at war, on again and off again, for much of the 18th century. The latest was the Seven Years War, as it was known in Europe, or the French and Indian War, as it was known in North America.

British forces conquered and destroyed the Fortress of Louisbourg, on the south shore of what is now Cape Breton Island, then fought a few skirmishes up the Atlantic coast on its way to Québec. The deciding battle of the war took place on the Plains of Abraham, at Québec, on September 13, 1759. The battle was over in a mere 15 minutes. A year later, on September 9, 1760, the French forces at Montréal capitulated, thereby ending the war in North America.

The war was formally ended by the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1763) on February 10, 1763, by which France ceded almost all her North American territory to Britain.
