The Zimmermann Telegram was a secret diplomatic communication sent by Germany to Mexico in January 1917 during World War I. Zimmermann was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Germany during World War I. It was his idea to send a telegram to Mexico offering support for an attack on the US to keep it out of World War I. Of course, it had the opposite effect when Britain intercepted the telegram and sent the decoded copy to America, which angered them enough to declare war the next day.
