The British and the French. On the eastern front, Germany's ally, the Austro-Hungarians, tied down the bulk of the Russian forces. Germany did scor a major victory over the Tsar at the Battle of Tannenburg in 1915. Field Marshall Paul Von Hindenburg, was the supreme commander of all German forces in the east, and his greatest victory. Years later in 1933, he would appoint Adolf Hiter Chancellor and the rest as they say, is history! The French & British armies inflicted far more German casualties than the Americans ever did. The reason being was they were in the war for over 3 long and bloody years, before the American Expeditionary Force got to France in 1917-and then they spent over 6 months behind the lines, training.
