I've read that England's deposed king Edward II was murdered in the 1300's by having a red hot Poker shoved up his anus. Although this was apparently a common mode of execution for homosexuals of the era, and Edward II was in fact a homosexual himself, this gruesome form of death was chosen in this instance as an attempt to hide the external evidence of murder, making his death appear to be from "natural causes."
