The first black American in the Baseball major leagues was Jackie Robinson.

Robinson did not challenge the color line just one time. In 1943, he petitioned to be admitted to the Officer Candidate School at Fort Riley, Kansas. The staff had a policy of refusing all black soldiers for OCS. Robinson appealed and eventually graduated as a second lieutenant. He was briefly part of the 761st tank battalion. He again challenged the color line by refusing to step to the back of a bus and eventually prevailed against charges by white officers.
