The social demands of artisans and some factory workers were put down quickly. Democracy persisted in France. Peasant demands were met, and serfdom was fully abolished throughout Western Europe. The failure of the revolution taught many liberals and working class leaders that revolution was too risky. Many governments also installed better riot control police. And at the end with the industrialization, social structure came to rest less on privilege and birth and more on money.
Unfortunately none of her brothers tried to save her. Her brother Joseph II was emperor of Austria, but he died in 1790. His succesor was Leopold II, another brother of Marie Antoinette, but he died in 1792. His son, Francis II now became emperor (Marie Antoinette's nephew), but at that time, Austria was at war with France, and Francis II had never met his aunt and did not care for her. Appeasement was a disaster primarily because it allowed aggressive powers, particularly Nazi Germany, to expand unchecked, emboldening their expansionist ambitions. By conceding to Hitler’s demands, such as in the Munich Agreement of 1938, Western democracies underestimated the threat he posed, ultimately leading to World War II. This strategy failed to prevent conflict and instead demonstrated that aggression would not be met with resistance, resulting in catastrophic consequences for Europe and beyond.
The demands of the Hungarian revolutionaries were met by the Austrian emperor, Ferdinand I, during the 1848 revolution. In response to the uprising, he granted Hungary a degree of autonomy, including the establishment of a separate government and the recognition of Hungarian as an official language. However, these concessions were short-lived, as the Austrian Empire later suppressed the revolution and reasserted control over Hungary.
