The real answer is, the last seemingly identical war, between the same principal opponents (France and Germany), took only five months, not counting a siege of Paris that extended the actual peace settlement another 5 months. It appeared that with modern, increasingly lethal weaponry, plus railroads for efficient movement, victory in Europe would be quick and complete, though it was less clear who would be that victor.
