Louis was officially arrested on 13 August 1792 and sent to the Temple, an ancient Paris fortress used as a prison. On 21 September, 1792 the National Convention declared France to be a republic and abolished the monarchy.

He was arrested because he tried to flee the country with his family and requested the help of other European monarchs to overcome this revolution and restore the monarchy in France. This was seen as treason, and this is what he was tried for.

For treason. At a time when France was at war with other nations, including Austria, he corresponded with the rulers of Austria and attempted to leave France and go over to the Austrian army. never mind that he felt threatened in France, never mind that the emperor of Austria was his brother-in-law; he was undoubtedly guilty as charged.

The French King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antionette (along with their children and others) were forced to vacate the Palace of Versailles and move to the Tuileries Palace in Paris due to the Women's March on Versailles.

The Women's March on Versailles, was one of the earliest and most significant events of the French Revolution. It began among women in the marketplaces of Paris who, on the morning of 5 October 1789, were near rioting over the high price and scarcity of bread. Their demonstrations quickly became intertwined with the activities of revolutionaries who were seeking liberal political reforms and a constitutional monarchy for France. The market women and their various allies grew into a mob of thousands and, encouraged by revolutionary agitators, they ransacked the city armory for weapons and marched to the royal palace at Versailles. The crowd besieged the palace and in a dramatic and violent confrontation they successfully pressed their demands upon King Louis XVI. The next day, the crowd compelled the King, his family, and the entire French Assembly to return with them to Paris.

However, imprisonment of the French Royal Family was due to the Royal Family's unsuccessful attempt to flee Paris and the areas which were then the hotbed for the ongoing Revolution in France.

King Louis XVI, his wife Queen Marie Antoinette, and their immediate family attempted unsuccessfully to escape from Paris in order to initiate a counter-revolution. Some sources state that their destination was the fortress at Montmédy in northeastern France, a Royalist stronghold; others claim that the destination was the Austrian border where loyal troops of the Austrian Empire were waiting for them(Austria was Marie Antionette's home and under the rule of her brother-the Holy Roman Emperor). The King hoped to start a military campaign which would restore his rule over France and restore the Royal power which had been seriously depleted and was under threat, due to the ongoing French Revolution. They were only able to make it as far as the small town of Varennes, where they were recognized and had to return back to Paris.

The incident was a turning point after which popular hostility towards the French Monarchy as an institution, as well as towards the King and Queen as individuals, became much more pronounced. They were then, upon their return, imprisoned in the Tuileries Palace. The King's attempted flight provoked the charges of treason which ultimately led to his execution in 1793.
