French intervention in the American War of Independence bankrupted the country which put strain on the economy and society. There were deep divisions in French society between the aristocracy (the nobility and the King) and the growing number of middle class people known as the third estate (doctors, lawyers, merchants, etc, essentially anyone who was educated, socially mobile, and increasingly wealthy).
