Ostensibly, it was to protect the soldier's body from artillery fragments which ricocheted off the helmet. The idea was that the frag would strike the crown of the helmet and be deflected downward, and then glance off the brim and away. Personally, I think that since it was an English design, it was meant to resemble the infantry helmets of the English Civil War, but I have no proof of this theory.

The German, French, and Portuguese steel helmets from WW1 also had brims for the purpose stated above.

What is the difference between a world war and a Civil War?

A World War (like World War I and World War II) has a lot of the world participating (in a more friendly word) in it. A Civil War (like the Vietnamese Civil War/Vietnam War or the USA Civil war) is when a large body fights against each other in a war. It's not like when your class can't decide whether to have pepperoni or cheese for your pizza party.
