Ostensibly, it was to protect the soldier's body from artillery fragments which ricocheted off the helmet. The idea was that the frag would strike the crown of the helmet and be deflected downward, and then glance off the brim and away. Personally, I think that since it was an English design, it was meant to resemble the infantry helmets of the English Civil War, but I have no proof of this theory.

The German, French, and Portuguese steel helmets from WW1 also had brims for the purpose stated above.

they were made out of a sort of thick steel with little straps to keep it on their head while in combat.
