I don't know if this is the answer your looking for but here is my knowledge of this. Mormons were prosecuted and kicked out of were they were from and so they moved to Utah and built cities and they thought it was so beautiful and peaceful there they called it the new zion. That is my understanding of it.
Brigham Young proposed a state called "Deseret", which included all of Utah and parts of Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. He often refered to the area as Deseret or Zion.
The people of the Mormon Church of more properly, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, settled in Utah after their first leader Joseph Smith was murdered in Missouri. Their Church had been persecuted and they, under Brigham Young, were sure that they were going to found a new Zion in Utah. There is no record of the 1845 slogan coined by the journalist John L. O'Sullivan called the "manifest destiny" that led the Mormons to Utah.
Zion National Park was established by President William Howard Taft in 1909. Brigham Young and the Mormon settlers were some of the first to settle and develop the area, advocating for its preservation.
