It depends on how encompassing the term "English" means in this sense. I am going to teach English in France and will be teaching the technical aspects of the language - grammar, spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary, etc. Teaching English in the States (and potentially other native English-speaking countries) also includes literature, literary analysis, and critical thinking. So teaching English strictly as a language requires fluency, an understanding of grammar, and the ability to communicate and teach what you know. I am going to be an English teacher, but I've also studied French intensively and Spanish to a lesser extent. I find that using activities (including games!) and lots of conversation is a great way to learn and practice foreign languages. For studying your native language it's also helpful to be creative because you're essentially teaching people things they already know - so you have to keep them interested!Teaching the literary side of English is practically a separate job! It entails a lot more stimulation - you have to ask questions, get students to ask their own questions, and be able to explore potential answers and the consequences of those answers. You have to find meaning in texts and guide students so that they can do the same. This involves a lot of reading, thinking, conversation, and writing. Writing is a good reflection tool and also a good way to explore/initiate analysis. So I would say an English teacher should be knowledgeable (as it pertains to the language, critical thinking, and teaching), creative, and inspired. Hopefully anyone going into teaching is patient, passionate, and committed!Well I know that seems a bit vague, but I hope it helps! Good luck! :)Source(s):English degree, writing minor, teacher :)
