My fellow US citizens may think me a little dim-witted for saying it, but the US can be a bit provincial in some ways, and maybe more than a little myopic. [Our European friends and relatives have known these things well for years.] We (along with our neighbors to the north and south) are isolated from most of the rest of the world. We tend to think of English as the only international language of note, even though for decades (centuries?) French was and is an important international language. Spanish is entering the arena as well, although you might find increasing numbers of the US population a little disenchanted with it given our current Immigration concerns.
