Not sure what the reason is, but they always help me. If I eat one Granny Smith apple a day for a week, I won't get heartburn for about a month afterward, and they usually kill the heartburn right away (you still burp up the food, but you don't get acid coming up the esophagus. Unfortunately, I always forget to eat my apples, and my heartburn comes back, as I said, usually after a month, and will gradually get worse until I try the apple treatment again.
i dont know about hamsters, since i dont have one, but guinea pigs can have apples. some wont eat them, others love them, remember to cut up the apple and never give them the seeds or the core.
