When do you start feeding hummingbirds in NC?

The standard answer used to be to take down the feeders after Labor Day to encourage your little guests to move on...but that actually isn't a good idea, because you will want to not only give your own backyard hummingbirds a final shot of calories/energy before they leave your vicinity, but also help migrating hummingbirds from more northern locales who make a stop in your area before moving on. Migration is triggered by the shorter days; it creates hormonal changes in the hummingbirds prompting them to fly south; the presence of your hummingbird feeder isn't going to override that call of nature. So -- short answer -- keep your feeder filled with nectar for about two weeks after your own local hummers leave; that will ensure that late travelers through your area can get refueled en route to the South.

How can you catch a hooded oriole?

I suggest buying a hummingbird feeder and filling it with sugar water (hooded orioles like drinking the sugar water from a hummingbird feeder) Then, hang the humming bird feeder in a bird cage outside. Attatch a string to the bird cage door and hold the string. Go inside and watch the cage from your window. When the hooded oriole goes in the cage, pull the string and the door will close.

If you put wasp repellent on a hummingbird feeder will it also repel the humming birds?

It would be best if it did, because anything that repels insects may be dangerous to hummingbirds (would you spray DEET on your dinner plate?). You can reduce problems with wasps by making sure your feeder doesn't leak and wiping any spilled sugar water off the outside of it every time you clean and refill it. If you do this and wasps are still a problem, buy a yellowjacket trap at a hardware store or home improvement center, fill it halfway with sugar water, and hang it where your feeder usually hangs. The wasps that would have been hanging around your feeder will climb in and drown. When you stop seeing wasps visiting the trap, you can rehang your feeder in that spot.
