It depends on what your definition of "useful" is. If you want something that catches mice and will sit in your lap, a cat may be more "useful". There is a breed of dog for almost anything you would like to do or any quality you like in companion. Sled dogs, running dogs, vermin dogs(terriers), lap dogs, sport dogs, etc.
