Although it has long been believed that there are no raccoons in Australia, there have been recent reports of a group of raccoons residing in Melbourne, Victoria, in the University of Melbourne Parkville campus. Many students have corroborated these sightings and, while not explainable, the presence of these raccoons is beyond doubt.

While it may be common for people to think they have seen raccoons in Melbourne University, it is more likely for people to see possums (students often get confused with raccoons). Raccoons have not inhabited Australia, especially not in Melbourne Uni.

Raccoons are found naturally in North, Central and South America only. They have been introduced to parts of Europe and Asia by man. If there are any raccoons in Australia, they were introduced by man and not a native species.
