Size is based on those laid during a hen's prime laying years. Pullets will lay much smaller eggs, and, as hens get older, they will lay increasingly larger eggs.
Size of eggs will vary by both variety and individual hen. Perhaps the best example of this is the leghorn, since the commercial white has been developed to lay a very large egg, but most other varieties lay medium sized eggs.

∙ 8y agoTo an extent... The first couple of eggs a chicken ever lays may be a little on the smallish side, but that is only temporary. Overall, they will lay about the same sized egg their entire life. The size of the egg is more dependent on the breed of chicken than the age.
