A fish breathes by bringing water into its mouth and forcing it out through its gills. This causes the dissolved oxygen to reach the blood and enter the fish's cells.
There are many different types of animals that live in water. Some of them like dolphins, whales and frogs are not able to actually breathe under water. Fish and other aquatic animals however have gills that filter the oxygen out of the water.
Oxygen is dissolved in the water much the same way carbon dioxide is dissolved in your soda. Most sea creatures have gills that can extract that dissolved oxygen as the water passes over them.

The simple REAL answer to this is they have gill's and the only animals that live underwater are fishes,dolphins whales etc.
EDIT: This is simply false. Whales and Dolphins do nothave gills. They are mamals, with lungs, and must come to the surface and breathe air.

Not all dogs can swim, the ratio of dogs being able to swim is about the same as the ratio of humans who can swim. Even if a dog can swim, like humans there are circumstances i.e. strong current, when dogs do drown.

∙ 12y agoSharks can not hold their breath because they do not have lungs to store the air in. They rely on water passing over the gills to mantain oxygenated. Above water they can survive until their gills become dehydrated and the supply of oxygenated blood runs out.

That is not true. My dog was bred with dogs that loved to swim, and he hates it, we can only get him one inch in the water! Don't believe those people, they aren't correct. If you want him to swim, take him to a dog friendly area with water, or set up a baby pool in your backyard. Anywhere that has a little water and is quiet is a good way to take him out of his scaredness. If you hold him in the water (or try to, if he is a big dog) he should be much more comtfrable in the water, also try keeping his leash on. You can also take private swimming lessons for him.
