Dogs have high frequency hearing (more than a human) so you can imagine how loud a clap of thunder or a high wind would sound to them. Not all dogs fear storms, but a great many do.
Things to help your dog:
- If your dog is a large dog then distract it by trying to play games with it or tossing the ball around.
- Cuddling with your dog. If your dog is large then get on the floor and cuddle your dog.
- Dogs love massages!
- Always speak in a calm and orderly manner as this will calm your pet down.
- Go about your regular chores (your dog will follow you) and the sight of you doing familiar chores will sometimes calm them down.
- You also put soft music on, but up a little more than usual so your dog isn't concentrating on the noises of the storm so much.
- If none of the above work, then speak to your vet. Sometimes the vet will give you a mild sedation (pill form) for your dog.
