No one is completely positive of pit bull origins. The first records of them were over 150 years ago in England. It is likely that they were a cross between the English bulldog and the white terrier which is now extinct. Sadly, they were first bred for dog fighting and bull baiting which are both now illegal. They were also used to herd cattle/ bulls. The traits bred into them that made them good for those things are ironically the most desired traits in a family pet: courage and loyalty. If you are a responsible owner then your pit bull will be your best friend. The trouble is, many people who buy pit bulls neglect to train them, train them to fight other dogs, and/or treat them with cruelty so they lose trust of the humans that are supposed to love them. This irresponsibilty is the main cause of pit bull attacks. Hope I helped!
