well if you have a dog, and it barks at the door when no one is their then it hears rather someone walking past your house or maybe a chipmunk. Dogs are intelligent very intelligent but not always they do what you say because they are more distracted on something else then what you are saying cuz they hear something you dont.

The audible range of dogs goes above 20000 hz which is the limit of human hearing. That is why dogs can hear sounds that humans cannot hear. 20,000 hz is the same as 20,000 cycles per second.

_____

The above answers the question "Do dogs hear sounds that humans do not hear?" The reason is because the anatomy and physiology of the canine ear and brain are different from those of humans. Since dogs with keener hearing had adaptive advantages over dogs that did not, they evolved with a keener and keener ability. The sound-sensitive organs (ear canals) in a dog's ears contain filaments that vibrate in response to higher frequencies than in the human ear. These filaments send information to the parts of the canine brain that process sound data. So when there are sounds that are above the human threshhold, we have no inner ear filaments that vibrate along with them. No filaments=no inner ear vibrations=no neural transmission of data to the auditory part of our brain. We do not hear them, but our canine companions do, easily. Dogs also have remarkably sensitive noses; far more sensitive than humans.

No, dogs have no understanding of human language. Dogs that are trained usually look for a unique sign the trainer gives them.
