I put treats out on the floor and let my hamster search for them. I also just let her run all around the house as long as I was watching her, but you might not want to do that.
The problem with letting the hamster run all over the house, or even run in one room is that it might 'poop' all over and there is a chance it can escape or get lost. I used to lay a blanket on the floor and create a border (books boxes 2 sides of the wall) then you can put all sorts of fun toys/tunnels/ pillows/even toilet paper rolls all around- or anything that might be fun for your hamster to climb or jump into- then put some treats here and there. when your hamster is done playing you can bring the blanket outside/ throw off the 'remains' and wash it.
ALways remeber- it gets BORING in a cage!
-Try to give it something new everyday, change its food- change where you put the toys or how you cut the food- and let your hamster out at least once a day- Zoos do this all the time (it's called enrichment) and allows your hamster to have a happy healthy and long life!
