Most ants are sterile, only the queen lays eggs. The queen makes one mating flight in her youth and stores up sperm to last her whole life (up to 10 years in some species). the queen doles out the sperm to her eggs one sperm per egg. These eggs hatch into females which can grow into anything from workers to queens depending on what they are fed. the unfertileised eggs hatch as males (an interesting side-effect of which is that all the sperm produced by that male will be geneticly identical to every other sperm). The queens children are all raised by their sisters.
