Unlike mammals, which have a larynx that allows us to make one sound at a time, birds have a syrinx which is located where their tracheas fork. In many Songbirds the syrinx is so highly developed that they are able tp produce a sound from each side of the fork at the same time. See the related link Avian syrinx for an illustration and more information.
