Currently there is only one species of tiger, with 8 tiger subspecies known in recent history. However, there has been debate regarding the genetic distinctiveness of the Sumatran tiger, with species status being considered.

Recent studies have shown that the Indochinese tiger may actually be 2 subspecies of tiger (Malayan and Indochinese), which would make 9 tiger subspecies currently alive.

3 subspecies - the Balinese, Javan, and Caspian - became extinct in the 20th Century.

There are 5, possibly 6, sub-tiger species still alive today:

  • Amur tiger
  • Bengal tiger
  • Indochinese tiger
  • Sumatran tiger
  • Southchina tiger
  • Malayan tiger

Currently there are six various types of tigers. There are the Siberian, Bengal, Sumatran, South China, Malayan, and the Indochinese. The largest tigers currently live in Russia.
There were 8 tiger subspecies taxonomically classified in history. As recent studies have shown that the Indochinese tiger may actually be 2 subspecies of tiger (Malayan and Indochinese), and the Amur and Caspian may be one (with only one nucleotide of difference), the number remains 8 tiger subspecies - albeit differently classified - with the Sumatran tiger genetically distinct from all mainland species (and possibly warranting species status). 3 subspecies are regarded as recently extinct (Balinese, Javan, and Caspian, though the latter may be revised due to reclassification).

There are 6 sub-tiger species still alive today:

  • Amur tiger
  • Bengal tiger
  • Indochinese tiger
  • Sumatran tiger
  • Southchina tiger
  • Malayan tiger

Altogether 9, but sadly 3 are already extinct and the 6 others are critically endangered..... Bengal Tiger Siberian Tiger Indochinese Tiger South China Tiger Malayan Tiger Sumatran Tiger Caspian Tiger (extinct) Balinese Tiger (extinct) Javanese Tiger (extinct)
There is only one species of tiger: Panthera Tigris. However, nine different subspecies are recognized, three of which became extinct in the latter part of the 20th Century.

Extinct

· Bali Tiger (panthera Tigris ssp. balica) - Island of Bali

o Males weigh 90 to 100 kgs

o Females weight 65 to 80 kgs

· Javan Tiger (panthera Tigris ssp. sondaica) - Indonesian Island of Java

o Males weigh 110 to 141 kgs

o Females weight 75 to 115 kg

· Hyrcanian Tiger (panthera Tigris ssp. virgata)

· Caspian Tiger also known as Persian Tiger, Turanian Tiger (panther Tigris virgata) - Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Caucasus, Tajikistann, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan

The Caspian tiger was very closely related to the Siberian tiger. In fact, dna evidence suggests the two diverged in the last few thousand years.

This has to do mostly with predictive statistics. For example, if scientists know that 1 acre of land can sustain let's say 3 tigers, they predict based on the number of acres times estimated number of tigers to arrive at the total number of tigers in that area. However, today, biologists can also use tracking devices. They sedate tigers and attach a tracking collar which lets biologists study the migration and hunting patterns. Scientists can study mothers with cubs to understand the social structure of tigers and their reproductive patterns. In addition to counts in the wild, based on predictive statistics, they also add the numbers of tigers kept in captivity such as zoos worldwide.

Are tigers prey predator or both?

Both, people have been hunting tigers for hundreds of years, and tigers have been killing people for hundreds of years. I think that if you were to put humans on one side and tigers on the other you would find that there are less tigers because people hunt them because of fear.WELL tigers are actually hunter and prey
