Watch out for entry points such as broken screens. Remove any food sources (insects) that may have drawn the creature. Aerosol treatments like Baygon in combination with Lizard Glue Traps or Lizard Tape are most effective. The lizard may be released from the trap outdoors by pouring vegetable oil where it is attached to the trap. Alternatively, some people just grab them (but there may be disease risks) or catch them in a cup.
The best way is to use a fine net, but barring that corral it into a shoebox or some such device. Be careful not to grab ti by the tail as many lizards will detach their tails as a defense mechanism.
Take the time necessary to move everything until you can get to the lizard - trap it with a towel or washcloth ad let it go outside. Most lizards will die within 3 days if they are trapped inside a house with nothing to eat or drink.
What you need to do is set a trap for the animal. Not knowing how large this lizard is, it is difficult to determine the best trap.
If the lizard is gecko-sized...less than a foot long, put a 5-gallon bucket on the steps (or even on the floor if you have no steps) and put a bit of water in it. Lay a walk-way or ramp to the bucket so it can try to get the water and fall in.
If you've lost a large iguana, you might need something more on the lines of a plastic kiddie pool.
If it is an adult Komodo dragon, tie up a poodle on a stout chain...maybe not.

A man went to a preacher's home to ride a lizard. The man saw the lizard he was to ride and after not seeing the preacher, decided to mount anyway. He then said, "Giddy-up." The lizard did not move. Just then the preacher heard him and came out. The preacher said, "In order to make the lizard go, you must say the name of Jesus. In order to make it stop, you must say the name of God." And so the man said the name Jesus and the lizard began to trot like a horse. The man then noticed the louder and faster he said Jesus, the faster and harder the lizard ran. He was so distracted by the fun that he was having that he did not notice the cliff ahead. When he did finally noticed, he yelled "Whoa! Stop! Whoa!" but the lizard kept going. Finally, he remembered. "GOOOOODDDDD!" The lizard stopped less than an inch from the edge of the cliff. He wiped his brow. "Jesus Christ!"
It is a surviving technique; so the lizard can redirect the attention of its enemy to the tail that if moving constantly which will give the lizard an opportunity to get away. The tail will regrow over a period of time.

Actually, they are there because of an adequate food supply of insects. Catch them and take them outside. You might explore the outer parameters of your home to see if there is a way that they are getting into the house.
