Horses that paw the ground, stomp their hooves, or kick their back legs are usually acting up because they are bored. To keep a horse busy, give them something to do such as a haynet to eat from. If you aren't interested in feeding your horse, try petting, grooming, or tacking it up so that the horse doesn't feel as if you are ignoring it.

You can teach it a "stand" command to teach it to stand still. You could also reprimand them with a "no!" and a slap when they paw. If nothing else, you can hobble it. This would have a double effect. For one, it would stop the pawing problem, and for another, it would make the horse more submissive to you.

Height to install horse cross ties?

The screw eyes for the cross ties should be about the same height at the horse's head. The only other things you need to complete the job besides the cross ties are some twine and the ring plates for the cross ties.

Can you pull cross ties on a horse to move its head position?

Could you please rephrase this question so that it is clear what it is you need to know. First of all, let's define "cross ties". Cross ties are two pieces of rope that are anchored on two walls opposite each other. They are used to keep horses stationary while they are being groomed and/or tacked up. They should be positioned so that they neither pull a horse's head upward nor pull the horse's head downward while the horse is standing still. I don't understand your reference to "pulling" the cross ties or to "move its head position". Please explain what it is you want to accomplish.

What is a tie down for horses?

When you want to tie a horse, avoid loose poles or trees without branches that are low. The best think to tie a horse to is a post that has a hole set where you can slip the rope through and tie it. There are also rings specially made for tying your horse and allowing it to slip when he pulls back, but it also tightens and makes it harder for him/her to pull. Cross ties are always convenient and work as well.

Why does my horse trap me against a wall when tacking up or grooming?

Most likely your horse is just being moody. Try using cross ties that won't give your horse a lot of room to move around while you tack/groom it.

What is the next step to training your horse after you have it on a lead rope?

After teaching it to walk on a lead rope, you need to teach it how to tie to a post, or railing. Then teach it how to tie on cross ties.

What are cross ties used for in horseback riding?

Cross ties are not used in riding per se, they are used to tie a horse for grooming, saddling, or other procedures. They consist basically of two ropes attached to the horse's halter from either side of its head, and further attached to structures like a stall or barn wall. They limit how much the horse can move around but also can cause them to feel trapped and panic... and occasionally flip over backwards and injure themselves and others. They are commonly used in larger stable operations.
