True it is cheep and easy to buy a new one, or find a free used one but its always better to DIY. Use your imagination, you can use the clear plastic cover for a stack of blank c.d.'s and attach it to a piece of wood or directly to a plastic or wire cage.
You can't really force it to, but at first when I got a hamster mine wouldn't and I realised it was because the wheel was too high for it to climb into. Maybe you could try lowering the wheel.
Just put them with it, they are naturally curious and will sniff, explore, taste, move, and figure it out on their own. No training is needed. Have fun watching them try different things until they see what it does.
On the lighter side:
Demonstrate to them all the wonderful uses they will find for one, such as:
Most hamster will pick one spot where they use the bathroom. Find out where that one spot is then put some bedding in the litter tray and your hamster should use it. If it doesn;t ust keep trying and if you have a hard time give it a treat when it does. :]
Hamsters can't really be trained. For whatever reason, hamsters just know how to use hamster wheels without being taught. They love to run in their wheels, especially when they are young.
I definatly wouldn't advise using a wire hamster wheel as a hamster can get its legs in between the wheel when running.
They can be loud when running on a hamster wheel or knawing at cage bars, but if the wheel is kept oiled and is non squeaky then it should be fine.
YOU can do whatever YOU want, but keep in mind YOUR HAMSTER may not like it, and it can cause YOUR HAMSTER to NOT TRUST YOU, the next time YOU go near the wheel while YOUR HAMSTER is on the wheel it will leave! Just remember your size compared to your hamster, u would get pretty scared if someone that's nearly 1000x bigger in size to u spun your wheel while u were on it..... Try to see things from your hamster's perspective! And remember: IT'S A PET, NOT A TOY! TOYS DON'T GET HURT AND FEEL PAIN, PETS DO!
I bought one that specifically says it is a silent wheel.
Because he wanted to know how far his hamster Burt ran every day.

Yes it is.
a wheel in its cage or a hamster ball
If you just got a new hamster it is hard to get it to run on its wheel. What I did was pick it up, put it on its wheel and gently turn it slowly so that they know what it is there for. Your hamster will only run on the wheel once it is comfortable with its environment. You can also buy a hamster ball and let it run around a room in it.
The smallest one you can find!
The cast of The Hamster Wheel - 1993 includes: Deirdre Donnelly as Jeanette
by running on their wheel
A hamster wheel is used in the cage and is powered by the hamster its self. A hamster ball is what you put the hamster in to exercise when you are cleaning the cage. A hamster ball is heavier so would probably go a bit slower but both are actually powered by the hamster its self so it depends on how fast it goes.
6.5-7 inches is a good size for a 4 inch dwarf hamster. If the wheel is too big your hamster will be fine. It is when the wheel is too small that it becomes a problem.
