Most chickens do not need more than a six to eight foot high fenced area. Many breeds have no desire to fly at all but others like Araucana chickens can fly well, even as well fed adults. If escape or protection is a factor then you might consider clipping the flight feathers of your birds. This does not hurt them and will force them to remain grounded.

This will have to be done again after each molt.
