The best way is to palm the cats head, place your forefinger and thumb on opposite sides of the rear of the jaw. Then with the pill in your other hand, pull their mouth open with your middle finger and place the pill on the back of the tongue with your forefinger, then let go. It sounds tough and harsh but it works! :)
The easiest way I've found is to kneel on the floor and place the cat between your knees, facing away from you. In this position, if the cat tries to back away from you when you open its jaw, it simply backs towards you.
Then place the palm of your hand on the top of the cat's head, and use two fingers of the same hand to hold the cat's jaw at the front, near the upper canine teeth. Lift the jaw gently, and the mouth will easily open. Pop the pill into the cat's mouth as far back as you can on its tongue, and just touch the top of the inside of the mouth with your finger for a moment - this triggers a swallowing reflex. Let the cat's mouth close and put your hand under the jaw and stroke downwards for a few seconds to help the cat to swallow the pill.
Give the cat a good calming cuddle afterwards since this kind of thing is scary for a cat and you should help the cat to calm down and put the incident behind it. Especially if it needs to take a course of pills.
To keep a cat's mouth open for a dental exam, gently grasp the sides of the cat's mouth behind the canines and apply gentle pressure to open the mouth. You can also use a special cat mouth opener tool if available. Make sure to proceed carefully and calmly to avoid causing stress or discomfort to the cat.
Called "panting" ... since cats can't sweat like humans, they can only cool off themselves through the glands in their tongue. -- I disagree. It's not normal for cats to pant or breath through their mouths. A cat breathing through it's mouth is generally an indication of a problem. Breathing hard with an open mouth can be a sign of a serious heart problem. You should check the tongue and gums for "pinkness." If these are losing color or taking on a blueish cast, then it is clearly a circulation problem and your feline's days are probably numbered. Mouth-breathing in cats is a condition that requires a Veterinarian.
During the flehmen response, cats are drawing in scents through a specialized organ called the vomeronasal organ, located in the roof of their mouth. This behavior allows them to analyze and process pheromones and other chemical cues from the environment or other animals.
A cat's mouth is cleaner. The average cat mouth has about 16-18 different types of bacteria, while the dog mouth has over 60 different types. They tend to have less because they open their mouths less often, thus not attracting so many microorganisms from the outside world, while the dog is constantly panting and breathing heavily through their mouths. Another reason because of this is that dogs tend to lick and bite things more than cats, whether it's exploring a new object or person that came into the house, drinking toilet water, or eating dirty socks. Cats, on the other hand, sniff and paw things when they want to play and only occasionally bite. A cat's mouth is also cleaner because of their eating habits.
Yes, a cat's mouth is cleaner than a human's, and possibly cleaner than a dog's, too. The saliva that destroys germs and keeps the mouth clean is more powerful in cats than it is in humans or dogs. It needs to be this way because cats use their mouths to clean themselves often. It is safe to share a Popsicle with a cat!
It helps their sense of smell.

Cats have a special gland on the roof of their mouth that allows them to 'taste' the scent, letting them smell it better. So in a sense they are. I am sorry I cannot remember what it is called and I can't find it.
Pilling's population is 1,739.
Yes, but cats don't smile with their mouth, they smile with their eyes. If they look at you, close their eyes, pause, and then open again, then they just smiled at you :(
