There are many different ways to tag a chicken. Here are a few.
1. You can buy rubber tags at your local western store, ebay, Amazon.com, or you can see if anyone has rubber tags on Craigslist. They will be little rubber circles that you put around your chicken's ankle.
2. You can paint their toenails. Chickens have very good eyesight though, so be careful about putting red. If you do put red, choose a dark red, not super bright.
Also, you need to repaint every 2-3 days because of scratching. It tends to come off quicker.
3. You can paint the tip of their wings with nail polish. I did this with my chickens. I chose light blue, black, dark red, and green. You can extend their wing(s) and paint the very tip. If your chickens' wings are not clipped, like mine, the tips of their wings will be covering the vent. This if the part of the wing you want to paint. That way other chickens won't peck, but you can see and identify the chicken.
