How do you tell if a hamster is a girl or a boy?

If the hamster is full grown, specifically more than two months, you will definitely be able to tell because the male genitalia is very large (almost as big as their head) and hangs down below the bottom.

It is often not easy to tell the sexes of hamsters. The difference between a male and a female is determined by the distance between the sexual opening and the anus. In the picture above, you can see that the sexual opening and the anus are a good distance apart. This signifies that it is a male hamster. For the females, the distance is much smaller.

Another way to determine the sexes is to note that male hamsters have their testicles clearly visible on either side of the anus. Females, on the other hand, do not have testicles. Males also have a sharper rear end than the females.

Hold your hamster on its back to look at the belly area. You can cup your hand over your hamster and gently turn it over onto its back, or hold the hamster by the scruff. Holding the hamster in a slightly upright ("sitting up") position will help you determine if testicles are present.

The surest way to tell is by looking at the anogenital distance. This is the distance between the genital openings (penile opening in the male, vaginal and urinary openings in the female) and the anus. This distance is much shorter in females than males (in fact the openings can be difficult to distinguish in females while they are separated by about half an inch in males). • The back end of the male tends to be elongated and rounder in appearance in comparison to the female (especially noticeable in Chinese hamsters).
• Males often have a noticeable scrotum with testicles after about 4 weeks of age, although the testicles can be retracted.
• Only females have nipples.
