Body symmetry is an adaptation to the habit of the animal. For example:

  • Radial symmetry is advantageous in sessile or sedentary and more or less passively drifting animals (Phyla Cnideria and Ctenophora), because it enables them to develop appendages all around the mouth for capturing prey or gathering food from all sides. Their sensory and nervous coordination is also concentrated around mouth.
  • Majority of animal phyla exhibit Bilateral symmetry. This type of symmetry is said to have evolved in those ancestral forms which started moving on ocean floor. A crawling animal is expected to encounter food with the advancing end. So mouth developed at the anterior end. The sensory organs and coordinating brain also developed near mouth at the front end, enabling the animals to sense or recognize edible or non-edible organisms.

When species are put into the same group because they have similar features?

the division is basicly so: kingdom-pylum-class-order-family-genus-species***(not sex) members of the same species***(not sex) are capable of producing a living fertile offspring. the other classifications are based on biological similarities and sometimes they change as new genetic information is discovered.
