How high off the floor do the nesting boxes for chickens need to be?

I have found two sources that say at least 18 inches off the ground. I have found that my chickens tend to favor the higher roosting areas, so the 18 inches sounds about right (I am preparing to mount my boxes today).

∙ 12y agoChickens will quite happily stay inside a fence which is only 3-4 feet high.
The biggest danger is keeping other animals out. Ensure that there is a wire roof on a low cage so that dogs, cats or foxes cannot easily get in.
