∙ 14y agoRoyal jelly, also known as bee milk or brood food, is a highly nutritious (for a bee) secretion from the hyperpharyngeal and mandibular glands of young worker bees, usually between three and 15 days old after emergence from the pupal cell. It is a creamy-white liquid substance which is fed to all larvae for the first three days after the egg hatches, and to queen larvae right up to the time of pupation. It is also fed to the queen throughout her life.
The exact composition of royal jelly is not known but it contains large amounts of the hydroxylated fatty acid 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decanoic acid (10HDA) and of the nucleic acids ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) together with about 35 per cent hexose sugars; also proteins, vitamins, amino acids, cholesterol and water.
Royal jelly taken directly from a queen cell is bitter in flavour and some people regard it as a cure for a number of conditions, but this has not been proven.
