Once, in an attempt to kill an ant, I actually decapitated it unintentionally. Horrified yet morbidly curious, I saw how long it survived, and I was surprised to notice it lasted about 10 minutes in a state of writhing and twitching. After that, it responded to stimuli for another 5 minutes or so and eventually died.

What's interesting is how coordinated the movements are for the first few minutes. After this, however, the ant slowly loses functionality.

*today(August 3rd 2014) a friend of mine managed to decapitate a rather large carpenter ant, this was around 3PM. it is now 5:15 PM, and the ant's body is still alert, and reacts when you touch it. once it stops moving, I will post a time, so far over 2 hours of activity!
